Root Canal Therapy
Winston-Salem & Greensboro, NC

One of the most misunderstood dental procedures is a root canal. Many people tremble in fear if they hear those two words. They are terrified that it is going to hurt, unlike anything that they have ever experienced before. The good news is that a root canal is nothing to fear. It will not be the most painful thing that you ever experience, and in fact, you may experience no pain at all.

Here at Eric J. Sadler, DDS & Associates we want to help people to finally understand what a root canal is about. With a little bit of knowledge, you will realize that a root canal is a routine procedure that will do you much good.

What Is a Root Canal?

If you learn a little bit about a root canal, you will understand why it is needed and the good that it can do for your mouth.

The inside of your tooth is known as the pulp. Sometimes the pulp is diseased or damaged. That needs to be cleaned out. It could be because of disease, it might be that there is decay, or sometimes a tooth was damaged due to trauma. The process of cleaning the pulp is a root canal.

With a root canal, we will hollow out the roots of the tooth. These are around the pulp. We will remove the diseased or damaged area. The next part of the root canal is that we will then fill the roots. Your tooth will then be healthy, and it will have been saved.

If you have an abscess on one of your teeth, we might recommend a root canal. That will help us to be able to drain the abscess and also get rid of the diseased area that caused the abscess to begin with.

If you wonder if you might need a root canal, there are a few things that you should look for. Pain in your tooth is a sign that something is wrong. You might need a root canal, or it could be something else that is going on. Always come in immediately if you are experiencing tooth pain. Another sign is if you have a tooth that is discolored. That could be a sign that there is decay in the tooth's pulp. Swelling in your gums is a sign that something is going on. It could be that you need a root canal.

Make sure that someone can drive you home after the root canal. Use ice on the area if you need to. There could be a little swelling, but you should not have too much pain. If you do have pain, remind yourself that it is less pain than the tooth would have caused you if you left it untreated.
