Periodontal Care
Winston-Salem & Greensboro, NC

Periodontal disease is a fancy term for gum disease. It is more common than most people think. If periodontal disease is left untreated, there are several different oral problems that it could lead to. It could be even worse than that. Gum disease is a major contributor to both stroke and heart attack. Here at Eric J. Sadler, DDS & Associates, we want to make sure that it will not come to that, and that your gums are healthy. Here is what you need to know about periodontal care.

Keeping Your Gums Healthy

If you keep your gums healthy, you will have better overall health. Here is some information to help you to have a healthy mouth.

It all starts at home. That is where you will have your first line of defense against gum disease. You need to develop good dental habits and a routine that will become second nature to you. If you are a parent, you will need to teach these things to your children as well.

There is no excuse not to brush your teeth. Ideally, it would help if you brushed after every meal and again before bed. Take a toothbrush to work with you so that you can brush after lunch. Make sure that you gently brush the tops of your gums as well. It would help if you used a soft bristled toothbrush. A toothbrush that has a medium or hard head can scratch your gums. That will not only hurt; it will leave you more vulnerable to infection.

Flossing also needs to be part of your routine. If you can floss only once a day, floss right before bed so that you will not sleep with bits of food still on your teeth. Be careful when you floss, you do not want to hurt your gums.

Mouthwash is another component of having healthier gums. Find a mouthwash that does not have alcohol, and preferably one that has fluoride as well. Swish the mouthwash in all parts of your mouth for the amount of time that is recommended on the package. Do not rinse your mouth out after the mouthwash, and do not eat or drink anything for at least 15 minutes.

Do not eat foods that are high in sugar or that will coat your teeth unless you can brush right away. Also, if you smoke or chew tobacco, try to quit. Either one can hurt your teeth, gums, and more.

A dental appointment every six months is another important part of keeping your gums healthy. One of the things that we will do during the routine checkup and cleaning is to remove the plaque that has built up on your teeth. Removing it is good for your teeth and your gums.

If you have bleeding gums, or if you have a sore that will not go away, we here at Eric J. Sadler, DDS & Associates want to know about it. Make an appointment by calling (336) 331-5271. Gum disease can cause many problems, but much of it is preventable with routine care. With a little bit of effort, you will have healthy gums for a lifetime.
