One of the most common dental services is getting a filling. There is a good chance that you have one. Most of the members of your family and also your friends most likely have at least one filling as well. It could even be that you have several fillings in your mouth. Here at Eric J. Sadler, DDS and Associates, we want our patients to know about fillings before they even get one. We know that you have questions, and we hope that here you can find some of the answers.
What You Need to Know About Fillings
Why do people get fillings? What happens during the process? What are the fillings made of? These are just a few of the most common questions when it comes to fillings.
A filling is exactly what it sounds like. It fills a hole in a tooth. The hole will usually be because of a cavity, but that is not the only reason. A cavity or another similar problem will only get worse if it is left untreated. When it gets worse, there will be more pain. There could be other problems as well.
When you need a filling, the process is fairly straightforward. You will receive something that will numb the area. That way you will not feel any pain during the filling. We will then drill a small hole in the tooth and clean out the infected area. After that, we will put the filling into the tooth. That is the simple version of what takes place when someone gets a filling. Remember that you should not drive yourself home after the filling because of the anesthesia.
There are several different materials that we can use for fillings. In your cavity is in the back then we will most likely use a filling that is made out of a combination of metals. If the filling is towards the front of your mouth or would be obvious when you open your mouth, we could use porcelain for your filling instead. That way, people will not be able to see that you have the filling.
Caring for your filling is easy. If you experience pain when you get home, an ice pack on the area might help. We will also give you suggestions for an over the counter pain killer if you have pain.
With a filling, you will take care of your teeth as normal. Brushing and flossing are important. Do not let sticky foods such as caramel stay on your teeth for long. If you notice that there is a problem with your filling, notify us immediately.
